Quantum computing is starting to look less like laboratory equipment and more like deployable infrastructure.
Diraq and Equinix have announced plans to install a silicon-spin quantum computer inside a commercial data center in Sydney.
The first system will integrate its cryogenic cooling and control electronics into a self-contained platform operating alongside conventional servers.
That is an interesting manufacturing milestone.
Even when the computing technology is fundamentally different, the complete system still needs:
• RF and control electronics
• Power management
• FPGA and processor boards
• Monitoring
• High-speed interfaces
• Networking
• Test and calibration hardware
New computing architectures do not eliminate conventional electronics.
They often create more specialized electronics around the core technology.
For PCB manufacturers, emerging computing platforms can therefore become interesting high-mix engineering opportunities long before they reach mass-market volumes.
